In 1891, James Naismith invented the game of basketball while working at the YMCA International Training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The game was required to not take up much room, not be too rough, and could be played indoors. The first game was played with a peach basket nailed to each end of the gymnasium, thirteen rules (twelve still in place today) and no dribbling was allowed, only passes between players. In 1898, Naismith moved to Lawrence, Kansas to serve as a professor, and the University of Kansas first basketball coach. Since, the school has developed one of the nation’s most storied college basketball programs. Today, NCAA Basketball consists of 32 Division I conferences, and Division II and III conferences with over 350 teams. In Division I each conference receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship tournament. The popularity and competitiveness of college basketball has given rise to a March tournament during which the championship game takes place. Naismith also created The NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship for smaller colleges and universities.
